Guild Wars 2 - Which Profession?

Ranger
Ranger which is a pet class within Guild Wars 2, The weapon of choice is usually the bow.  All rangers have a keen eye and steady hand for precision shots along with the use of nature to help them defeat the enemy.
There is a choice of  pet from the following (dependant on race chosen).  The Ranger wears medium armour for protection.  There is also  a separate post in regards to the starter pets here.

Elementalist
Elementalists use the powers of destruction to best their enemies.  These powers come form the natural elements, Fire, Air, Water and Earth.   when creating the character you are asked which loved symbol you wear from the four elements.  They wear light armour.

Warrior
The Warrior is a balance of offensive and defensive moves and abilities. they use martial arts, speed and strength as well as toughness to beat their opponents.  They get to choose a symbol of their power through choosing a piece of armour.  This armour piece can be a Spangle helm which intimidates the foe, a Galea so as they remember who defeated them or no helm at all causing the opponent to cringe and falter at the sight of you on the battlefield.  They wear heavy armour to protect against damage.

Necromancer
Uses the Dark arts to defeat there enemies.  They are also a pet class that summon the dead to fight their battles for them whilst hitting the target from a ranged position.  they draw life forces to heal themselves and wear light armour to protect against physical damage.  They get to choose form a mask they wear as a mark of how close to death they really are.  The masks are of the Trickster God, a Skull or a Ghostly Wraith each does impact on your attributes so choose wisely.

Guardian
This is your tank class built and trained in the art of defence.  Their abilities include protective and defensive abilities and manoeuvres.  They can use many and varied weaponry so playing around with these for ultimate damage or protection would be useful. Guardians are given the option of choosing a piece of armour.  Pauldrons or a helm to be precise.  They are offered either Conquerors Pauldrons, Fanatics Pauldrons or a visionary helm.

Thief
These are your scout class who use stealth and shadows to surprise their foe before using high damage abilities to slay them.  thieves are offered a style rather than a pet, mask or piece of Armour, they can choose to have anonymity, determination or be a subterfuge. They are excellent in one to one combat or as support in a group. Medium Armour is their choice protection against the enemy.

Engineer
Engineers are a new class to me,  they can use turrets, grenades and various elixirs and potions to thwart the enemy.  Up close they can be slightly 'squishy' but when you manage to keep the enemy at range these are hard hitters.  they get the choice of a tool they carry with them at all times, it can be a Wrench, Eagle eye goggles or a Panscopic Monocle.

Mesmer
They use illusion to confuse and damage the target.  they can create up to three clones of themselves who fight up close whilst keeping themselves at range.  Not necessarily high damage until you destroy your clones and then things heat up. Mesmers, like Necromancers, get the choice of a mask but this is because they choose to hide behind that mask as an illusion.  It can be the mask of the Harlequin smile, the phantasm of sorrow or the fanged dread.

I hope this helps a little when choosing your profession however there are other posts on Character creating on this blog or the cited blog below, so feel free to browse and use the information as you will.

Guild Wars 2 - Ranger Pets

Rather than use the common term 'class' Guild Wars Two has named these as Professions.  This my Human and her profession is Ranger.  She uses the Bear mainly.

There are Eight professions altogether in Guild Wars two and here is the ranger profession pet choices you are given throughout the creation of your ranger.
I will try and keep each explanation Brief but keep in key info that will impact your build stat wise.

Ranger
Ranger which is a pet class within Guild Wars 2, The weapon of choice is usually the bow.  All rangers have a keen eye and steady hand for precision shots along with the use of nature to help them defeat the enemy.
There is a choice of  pet from the following (dependant on race chosen).  I have given a brief overview of what each pet can do but further details can be found at the end of the post.

Sylvari - Fern Hound can regenerate its own healing.and has above average Damage Per Second (DPS).

Human/Norn - Bear, this is a tank pet and can take a lot of damage whist in battle.

Sylvari - Moa can heal itself and allies and is a basic healer for you or your group.

Asura - Flamingo dishes out distractions using mainly interrupts.

Asura/Human/Sylvari/ Charr - Stalkers can dish out high damage but cannot take as much damage as the hound or Bear..

Asura/Charr/Human - The Drake family are your Area affect damage pet however it is mentioned that the salamander drake is difficult to keep alive as it does short bursts of offence but has few hit points.

Norn - Snow leopard is a tank pet however not quite as skilled as the bear but still a good pet to have.

Charr - Carrion Devourer can regenerate and uses dots of poison and venom to take down the enemy, can also retreat underground.

Norn - Alpine Wolf is used as a distraction and uses stuns and knock downs

Tank means that whatever it is has the most hit points before it will go down.  If you plan on solo playing a tank is always the better option.  At least that's how I play and I seem to do OK relying on a tank pet.

Character Creation in Guild Wars 2 - Which Race

There are ten steps to creating your own unique character in Guild Wars 2. This is a Norn Mesmer and unknown to me that in the starter zone for the

Selecting your race is the first thing you must do when creating your character. You have the choice of  Humans, Charr, Norn, Sylvari or Asura. All Races are given the choice on what they use to gain favour.  The question that gives you this choice is as follows:

"Trouble may follow me but I use my" Dignity/Charm/Ferociousness "to overcome it".  There are several other options to choose form after this dependant on race and class.  I will do my best to list them all below as they do have an impact on the characters story line quest which is personal to them.

Humans
Known as the defenders of Kryta have lost their homeland due to a great war with the Charr, Ascalon was conquered, however the awakening of a dragon created a tidal wave that destroyed coastal areas and Lions arch, the biggest human city of that time. Six of their gods have left mankind to fend for themselves but this is see as a test by the humans and they carry on regardless with spirits high and will power remaining determined to succeed against all odds. They are given the choice of who brought them up, you can choose between the common folk, In the streets or amongst nobility.  You also have to answer a question about your biggest regret, your choices are that you never searched for your true parents, you never recovered your sisters body or you never joined the circus.  Both of these choices affect your storyline quests.  Their adventure starts in Queensdale.

Charr
Forged by war and war alone, its all they know and all they understand.  There are three legions amongst the Charr.  The Iron Legion, The Blood Legion and The Ash Legion.  Each fights war the only way they know how, by sabotage, by brute force or using machinery to gain them dominance over anyone who gets in their way.  Currently there is a fourth high legion who have fallen form grace due to their worship of false gods. The Flame Legion now wages war against the Charr in the hope of regaining dominance over all Charr. As a Charr you are given the following choices.  You would die for which one of the following sparring partners, maverick, Euryale, Clawspur, Dinky or Reeva.  You are also told that the soldier that sired you was one of the following, A loyal soldier, a sorcerous shaman or an honour-less gladium.  This battle begins in Ashford plains and continues ever more brutal as you venture further outward to the world of Tyria.

Norn
I love the Norn, they remind me of Vikings of old but with better manners.  they are all about being victorious in the hunt and achieving glory through battle.  It is all very honourable but make no mistake the Norn can be brutal in battle.  They too have lost their homeland, driven form it by the ice dragons.  The Norn are given the choice of which Quality is their most important.  Is it that they have the strength to defeat ancient foes, the cunning to protect the spirits or the intuition to guard the mists.  They are also the victims of a celebratory Moot held in Haulbrek and you have to decide what it is that happened to them.  Would it be that they blacked out, that they got into a fight or that they lost an heirloom.  Again this impacts your characters storyline quest line.  They begin there journey in the Wayfarer foothills with one of the earlier quests being the one regarding the Ravens.

Sylvari
Awakened souls from beneath the Pale Tree.  During their lives the live in a dream state called the pre-life dream and they awaken when they summoned to serve their purpose.  This race are connected through the Pale Tree and whilst on their travels, the knowledge they learn is fed back to the pale tree to the Sylvari that still lie in dream state.  The easiest comparison to make would be to say that the Sylvari are like the Borg but better mannered and with more nobility about them.  Their choices are made of visions, what did your character see in there vision, was it a Stag, the green Knight or the shield of the moon.  Another choice you need to make questions when the Pale Tree awakened you.  Dusk, Dawn, Noon or Night.  Each has significance so choose wisely. The path to their destiny starts in their Dream state and with victory behind them in that dream state they will finally awaken in the Caledon Forest.

Asura
Look small but think big.  The Asura are the genius's of magitech basically.   They are alchemical inventors that believe the clever survive over the strong and that one day they, the Asura will rule all.  Like the Charr and their own three legions, the Asura have a choice to join either of the three main colleges.  The College of Statics, The College of Dynamics or The College of  Synergetics.  They can also choose what there fist invention was.  Did your Asura invent the VAL-A Golem or the weather changing machine called the Transatmospheric converter or the infinity ball which may or may not give you the future.   These choices do have an impact on how your character is played and there will be a more detailed post about these and the Charr legions shortly.

So there you have it.  A quick guide to get you started on ideas for which Race to try out.  They are all fun to play but I have to admit the Norn are my favourites.  Which ones yours?

Character Creating in Guild wars 2 - Sylvari Ranger

Level 18 Guardian
Creating a character in Guild wars 2 is not just a case of maximising your attributes.  It is a ten step process and creates a more personalised character with their own storyline for the first twenty levels.

Above is my Guardian at lvl 18 and she made many different background choices during character creation to give her, her own personal storyline to follow in game.

Sylvari
For the purposes of this post I went through the character creation and created this character.  We will call her 'Dreamer' as I deleted her afterwards (having enough alt's as it is).  The purpose of creating her was to take details of each step in order to guide you through the character creation.

Dreamer

Dreamer is of the race Sylvari.  The Sylvari are awakened souls from beneath the pale tree.  During their lives the live in a dream state called the pre-life dream and they awaken when they summoned to serve their purpose.

She has the profession (class) of Ranger which is a pet class within Guild Wars 2, her weapon choice is the bow.  All rangers have a keen eye and steady hand for precision shots along with the use of nature to help them defeat the enemy.  Her favoured pet is the Fern Hound who stands by her even when she is faced with the toughest of opponents.  the fern Hound is basically your tank pet as it has the most vitality and toughness.

Her background consists of choices I made (words in bold below) during the following questions:

1. "Trouble may follow me but I use my" Dignity "to overcome it".

Dignity shows a thoughtful personality which gains respect.  Sylvari using dignity believe that this thoughtful demeanour is their route to success.

2. "I dreamed of a quest that calls me to action.  It was a vision of the" Moon.

The shield of the moon symbolises healing and fortitude along with faith are said to protect any who dream of this symbol..

3. "I believe that the most important of Ventori's teaching is" All things have a right to grow.

This means that 'Dreamer' will stand up for the rights of others and not condemn them for just being different.

4. "The pale tree awakened me during the cycle of the" Dawn".

The cycle of the dawn represents deep thinkers, talkers, diplomats and those that are intimately connected with their surroundings.  they are also very empathic towards all  including all other races.

The final step is to choose your name.  at this point I will add that the great thing about guild wars naming system is that you can choose a surname too so getting a character name is not as difficult as you would think.

This is just a simple mock up of a Sylvari ranger with pet and background but I will be posting all other options available throughout character creation to help you build any race or profession/class.

Everquest - New life

I always log back into Everquest 2 at Christmas time for their annual frost fell event.  This year was some what different though.  Frost fell looked completely different with ice statues of Bears, wolves and deer everywhere.  The fairies were frozen too which gave you a brand new quest line to do in frost fell.  It was a fairly easy quest but new and fun.

Of course when you log back in for one thing you discover other new things too.  An option to upgrade characters to level 85 heroic for instance.  I knew there was a new expansion 'Tears of Veeshan' although I did not realise how popular it would be.  I logged in and chat was busy and still is.  The broker is not so stagnant any more either.  Tears of Veeshan has been out since early November and the game has never been stronger.  This new expansion along with major updated improvements on graphics and new quest lines really seems to have done the trick and Everquest 2 seems to be back on track.
