Minecraft - Day one survival

So you've bought the game because you've heard all of the hype but you really don't know much about the survival aspect of the game.

There are a few things you need to do to help you survive through the first night in the game but you only have one day to prepare, One day equals ten minutes in the 1.7 version.

You need a shelter.  anything that is 3 squares by 3 squares and 3 squares high is good enough however make sure you leave a gap so as you can see the daylight again as if your mining down into your shelter through the night, you can loose track of time. You also need torches, this is a must if you don't want zombies, archers, spiders or worse, Creepers, spawning right beside you in the dark.

You can cut down trees without an axe but it wastes valuable time so make sure and get enough wood to build a crafting table, sticks, blocks for the axe head or pick axe head (for mining) and burning material to make charcoal  (About 10 tree blocks) then make sure you chop wood for your shelter with either a wooden axe or a stone axe.  The video below shows most of this  and how to make them, although the Xbox has a click option that does it all for you if you have the right materials but I am not sure about the Play-station versions, so if you do need to know, it's in the video.

You do not always have to make a shelter either, if you spawn next to a cave, you can just block it up with dirt to keep you going through the first few nights until you gather what you need. You might want to make a stone sword in preparation for fighting at night or a pick axe if you prefer to mine at night too.

Minecraft - Village with Red Brick house and pool

I often take notions to build full villages or towns with a main house that I use for crafting and shelter at night.  This scenario has two man houses so far however as its meant to be for PVP once its all built.  I still need to build the third house but the village is working and the farming is dealt with.

In the main house I have all of the tinkering set up.  With the tinkering mod you get double the ore when smelting and you can make weapons, armor and tools out of copper, steel and other metals, as well as wood.  Its a handy set up to have as sometimes Iron is somewhat difficult to come by.

Just as a recap the mods I use for this profile are:
Bibliocraft
Tinkers construct
Natura
BiomesOPlenty
Carpenters Blocks
Decocraft
Forestry
Chisel2
Growthcraft
Gardenstuff
Journeymap
NEI
Waila
Ruins

The Gilneas Story line-part one

My favorite story line of all the WOW expansions so far has to be the Gilneas one. For anyone that may be thinking of going back to WOW or for any teenagers that are thinking of trying out World of Warcraft I would highly recommend trying out the Worgen first off.

Wow is a very longstanding MMO and as such there are always kids wanting to try it out so this is a walk through specifically geared for any new players but if your nostalgic this may well take you back to World of Warcraft.

You begin by being sent to speak to Prince Liam and Quest 1 and 2 involve killing 6 Worgens, and evacuating the market square, be aware that once you knock on a door to evacuate the person, an aggro Worgen may come out too.

You need to speak to Gwen Armstead as well, she will give your quest 3 and ask you to try and find and bring back supplies that have been stolen.

Quest 4 - is your trainers quest
Speak to your trainer, Druid, hunter, warlock etc,  in the military district, hes not far form the market square.  You get your second ability.

They then give you Quest 5 which is to use your new ability, if you're a hunter this is 'Steady shot' to kill Bloodfang Worgens.  You can find these on to the west on your map and the area is highlighted blue on the mini map.

Quest 6 is called safety in numbers and you need to report back  to King Graymane in the military district.

Quest 7 is called Old Divisions and the king asks you to go and speak to Captain Bodreck regarding Darius Crowley inside the Stoneward Prison.  Use your mini map in the top corner and follow the route to the yellow question mark. this

Speak to Lord Godfrey who is next to the king and he gives you Quest 8, called 'While you're at it' you need to kill 5 Bloodfang.

This video takes you through the first 8 Quests.

Quest 9 is where you speak to Captain Broderick and he sends you up to speak to Lord Darius Crowley.

Quest 10, the Prison Rooftop  He asks you to survive 2 minutes of attacks form mass groups of Worgens.  the easiest way  to do this is by hitting the tab button as you see the Worgens coming and hit your attack buttons, hit tab and attack and so on as if this is your first attempt at this quest it might look like a disaster but it's not really.  In the video below my niece is playing with me and she manages it by using the tab button and pressing the number key for her attack move too.

Quest Eleven, 'Brothers in Arms' asks you to go back and speak to King Greymane.
Quest Twelve, 'The Rebel Lords arsenal' asks you to speak to Josiah Avery

This video takes you through to Quest  twelve.

After speaking to Josiah you are given quest 13 'From the shadows'.  You have to kill Bloodfang Lurkers.  You are given a Mastiff to help you as they can see them. When you here a (in my nieces words) a ghostly noise nearby, press control and 1 and your mastiff will attack if the Bloodfang lurker is in range, press tab to target it and then attack.

Quest 14 sends you back to speak to the King.  Quest 15 the king asks you to Save Krennan Aranas, you are given a horse and when you near Krennan, who is hanging from a tree,  you click the new action you have been given and your horse then takes you and Krennan back to the king.  Quest 16, 'Time to re-group is completed when you speak to the king. While you are speaking to the king you may want to stop for a while and listen to the conversation the king is having with Lord Darius Crowley.

Speak to Crowley,  he gives you quest 17, 'Sacrifices'.  you ride with Lord Crowley and round up 30 Bloodfang Stalkers, this quest can be confusing as you're not actually rounding them up but potentially throwing grenades at them.  If you don't round up 30 you won't get the next quest from Tobias Mismantle, jump on a horse next to him and go back out to get the full 30 Bloodfang Stalkers.  Also, if Tobias Mismantle is dead when you reach the cathedral, you will need to wait on him re-spawning to get the next quest (These have both happened to me in the past and are irritating but fixable).

Tobias gives you Quest 18, 'By Blood and Ash'.  You need to use the cannons to kill 80 Bloodfang Stalkers. He then tells you to go and speak to Lord Darius Crowley inside the cathedral.  Crowley asks you to kill more Bloodfangs and once you have completed this you get a nice little cut scene to watch...and it is one of my favorite scenes of this story line.

After the scene you find yourself in Duskhaven, speak to the king, once you have spoken to him you must speak to Lord Godfrey for the 21st quest.

This takes you through to the transition and onto Quest 21.

Hotel and penthouse with beginnings of town

My last blog featured the Hotel with penthouse but there was much more to see.  due to issues with the video upload I could not get the full video loaded.

I have been able to fix this so you can now see a mini train station, the beginnings of a town, a restaurant and road with traffic.

I do have some mods to help me along the way however and would like to credit them here, I apologise if I forget any.

Bibliocraft
Tinkers construct
Natura
BiomesOPlenty
Carpenters Blocks
Decocraft
Forestry
Chisel2
Growthcraft
Gardenstuff
Journeymap
NEI
Waila
Ruins
This took me around about a week to build in creative mode but as I mentioned previously this whole set up is going to be used as a PVP hunting ground once its completed.

I have put in a link to the video so feel free to try out some of the ideas, I keep them simpe as we play with our nine year old neice and she likes to use the ideas too.

Ancient Egypt build

I am fascinated by ancient wonders, in particular ~Ancient Egypt so I decided to try and build some of them in minecraft.
I tried building on two different Biomes but unfortunately when 1.8 came about I opened one of them in the wrong profile and it literally fell apart.  The other build however has survived the test of time, so far, and is in the video link.

This was my second attempt at the great library which I was heartbroken when it fell apart, this is the price you pay however, when you mod your game and them open a save file under the wrong profile.  I tend to label them now with the version I'm using so as that doesn't happen any more.

This is the inside of the great library.
The video below shows my first attempt at building some of the Ancient Egyptian wonders.  Size comparisons are a little awkward but other than that it is a good practice run and still easy enough for kids to pick up. There are also other builds that are easy to build which I've written about previously.

Ideas for hunting grounds in Minecraft - Hotel and penthouse

Minecraft can be used for a multitude of different game play.
You can play as it was intended and try and survive by building a shelter before night falls and the zombies come out.  You can modify it and play hunger games, RPG,  drop puzzles, mazes or any other method of play you can think of.  If you are like me however, I love to just build.

I build Hotels, stilt houses, towns, villages, Trucks, lorries, and eventually I would like to build a full length orient express style train but I am a solo player most of the time so my projects can take some time.

I do have some mods to help me along the way however and would like to credit them here, I apologise if I forget any.

Bibliocraft
Tinkers construct
Natura
BiomesOPlenty
Carpenters Blocks
Decocraft
Forestry
Chisel2
Growthcraft
Gardenstuff
Journeymap
NEI
Waila
Ruins

All of these mods add something to the game and if you have ever played the vanilla version of the game you will spot the items that are unavailable.  anyone who hasn't played or is investigating for child friendly games, all of the mods above other than NEI are used more for decorating and building than fighting.  Even saying that NEI can add monster spawners but this is no different to the vanilla version giving you the zombie eggs to spawn a zombie other than an actual spawner spawns more zombies.  I have to say that minecraft is not based around the monsters as you can always switch it to peaceful mode if you don't want your child playing the survival mode.

The video I have embedded below shows a four story hotel with penthouse.  Further video's will follow later that show the train line which takes you to the beginnings of a new town and a second train track that takes you to an area, yet to be built on. The whole project has taken me around a week to build on my own so far, but is far from finished.  The plan for this is to open it up into survival once its all complete so as my man, my niece and me can all play.  it a long term project but it's moving along nicely.

Minecraft Builds

Minecraft is one of those games that you just cant leave alone for any length of time if you have imagination.  I have put up a very small overview of various builds but will be posting more on some of them over the next few weeks.

I personally use creative mode with lots of 'mods' to create everything from train stations to hotels, strongholds inside caverns, Ancient Egyptian monuments and whole mountains turned into living quarters, as well as various different house styles.

Add caption

This is a stronghold i decided to build inside a cavern as well as building cave farming and growing trees there are tunnels throughout this stronghold that take you all over the area without having to encounter those annoying skeleton archers.

Below is a village a built, I love building villages and complexes and watching them all work, you build the right trade posts such as furnaces for a blacksmith or apothecary for potion seller and this is good support for survival mode too.   I hate when villagers get into my house so I built my own self sufficient red brick house across the water form them, far enough away so as I can buy and sell but not to close that they can let a zombie through my door !

This is a huge built of my idea of the great library of Alexandria, I have a whole Ancient Egyptian build but this was done on a separate seed as it was too big to replace my smaller version below.

This is  the latest build I have been working on, it roughly about 18 blocks high and about 25 squared on average.  I have another two floors to add to it, then a road and train station, this is one of the bigger builds so will be adding much more to this one and then..opening it up for survival mode (take some lights out inside the hotel and train station to allow spawning inside and it will be a great inside survival experience !

Yes the interior will probably be blown to smithereens by some vengeful creeper but the fun will be the survival of the fittest style, this is the sort of place you can set up a base in and for family fun my man, myself, and the wee one can all team up to beat the zombies !
